Shenandoah University business student Michael J. Sbandi has been awarded the prestigious McGowan Scholarship by the Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business (Byrd School). Sbandi, the son of John and Donna Sbandi of Winchester, is a graduate of Sherando High School.

Sbandi is a rising senior who is focusing on finance in his BBA program. During his time at SU, Sbandi has started his own small business, Devil's Den Productions, which operates Halloween-style haunted attractions. He was appointed to the Student Advisory Board and has been continually named to the Dean's List with a 3.99 GPA.

He has also started an internship with M & H Plastics, a local bottle manufacturing firm. In the future, he plans to utilize his educational knowledge by owning and operating his own financial consulting firm. He said that when he reaches his career goals, he plans to give back to Shenandoah in any way he can - financial support of the Byrd School or timely lectures on various topics that will influence and inspire future generations of business students.

The scholarship was made possible by the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund. The William G. McGowan Scholars Program encourages leadership, interpersonal skills and a significant involvement in campus and community activities. It also recognizes excellence of character, a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurial potential. Scholarships are awarded to selected accredited college and university business schools. McGowan was the founder of MCI Communications Corporation. The Byrd School received accreditation from AACSB International in April 2007.

This is the second year that a Byrd School student who meets specific academic criteria has been selected as the McGowan Scholar. The honored student will be eligible for a tuition scholarship up to $18,000.
