Music Education

Music Education is one of the Shenandoah Conservatory's oldest and largest programs and has produced hundreds of music teachers that are changing the musical lives of public school students across the country. Active as teachers, music supervisors, program coordinators and administrators, our graduates are leaders in the field of music education.

BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN MUSIC EDUCATION

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education (BME) degree is intended for students who plan to teach music in the public schools and seek licensure as a qualified music teacher by a state department of public instruction. Students complete courses in music, music teaching techniques, and general education studies to fulfill requirements for the K-12 Virginia music teaching license. The degree program includes a balanced combination of courses, teaching experiences, and performance opportunities designed to foster and develop skills as musicians and teachers and prepare students for successful careers in music teaching.

MASTER OF MUSIC IN MUSIC EDUCATION

The Master of Music Education (MME) degree is intended for the practicing music educator. Featuring targeted study in pedagogy, scholarship, and musicianship, the MME degree is uniquely designed to increase students’ skills as reflective musician teachers. The program is offered during summer-intensive sessions and culminates with a research teaching project.

WORKSHOPS in MUSIC EDUCATION

Shenandoah Conservatory has been an active leader in music education since 1875. As a part of our ongoing commitment to music teaching and music learning we offer workshops to enhance the pedagogy of practicing music education.
