First Year Seminar - Going Global

Dear Prospective SU student,

Shenandoah University's Going Global initiative is a series of building blocks that begins here, with the Going Global First Year Seminar.  Here we develop a sense of community among the Class of 2015 for whom 'belonging' begins with the University.  The goal is to lift these borders, yet maintain, deepen, and expand the feeling of belonging to the global community where you realize that you can make a difference - and that difference begins with you.

In the fall, all first-time Shenandoah students will register for one of the 25 Going Global offerings. Some of their choices include “Reformulating ‘The Family’in 20th-century Black Novels,”“Chopsticks, Calligraphy and Zen: A Taiwanese Approach to Culture, Etiquette and the Arts,”“Contemporary Social Issues in the World of Business,”“Development and Disaster Relief,”“Global Perspective on Maternal and Child Health,”“You are Consumer of the World,”and “Popular Culture Around the World.”

First-Year Seminar student mentors assist faculty members by serving as advisers to first-year students during their transition into university life and are academic tutors in one of the Going Global: First-Year Seminar sections in fall 2011. Each mentor acts as a liaison between the student and instructor and helps build a Class of 2015 community.FYS mentors must be sophomores, juniors or seniors with at least an overall “B”average.

Our faculty offers courses that range in topic from Cultural Conflict in Dramatic Literature to Development and Disaster Relief.  All classes focus on a global theme, all classes are small in size, and all classes are challenging and highly interactive.
