Named for the “clear-singing” rooster from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Chanticleer is “the seamless blend of its 12 male voices ranging from countertenor to bass and its original interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music.”
Founded in 1978, Chanticleer’s mission is to “present choral music at the highest level of excellence and to encourage worldwide appreciation for the art of ensemble singing through live performances, education, recording and the creation of new choral work.” In 2002, the ensemble’s “Colors of Love” album won a Grammy Award for Best Small Ensemble Performance.
Chanticleer, deemed “the world’s reigning male chorus” by The New Yorker magazine, is appearing at Shenandoah’s Performing Arts Live series for the second year. The mission of the Performing Arts Live series at Shenandoah Conservatory is to bring world-class performing artists to the Northern Shenandoah Valley. Chanticleer, a San Francisco-based ensemble, will perform over 100 concerts this year, appearing in 21 states and 12 foreign countries including Austria and the Czech Republic.
Chanticleer is Eric Alatorre, Matthew Curtis, Brian Hinman, Dylan Hostetter, Ben Jones, Gabriel Lewis-O’Connor, Michael McNeil, Cortez Mitchell, Gregory Peebles, Alan Reinhardt, Adam Ward and Jace Wittig (assistant music director).
Preceding Monday’s concert is a one-hour pre-concert chat with Michael Main at 6:30 p.m. in Armstrong Concert Hall. For tickets, contact the Shenandoah University Box Office at (540) 665-4569. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.su.edu/conservatory.
