Shenandoah University was founded in 1875 in Dayton, Va., and moved to its current location in Winchester in 1960, 50 years ago. Shenandoah University celebrates the history and tradition of its Dayton Campus each spring by hosting a special alumni reunion weekend for Shenandoah alumni who attended the school before the move to Winchester. The Dayton Alumni Society will gather together for a weekend of events on Thursday, April 22 through Sunday, April 25, including a special recognition of the last class to graduate from Shenandoah in Dayton, the Class of 1960.
"This year marks the end of an era as the last class to graduate from Shenandoah at the Dayton Campus will meet for a 50-year reunion," said Jane Pittman, associate vice president for alumni affairs. "While many Dayton alumni still live in the Harrisonburg area, graduates from 12 states, as far away as Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Maine and Michigan, will return for this reunion. They will represent four decades of Dayton alumni from the 1930s to the 1960s."
Shenandoah University administrators are planning a year-long commemoration of the golden anniversary of the Dayton legacy and the relocation to Winchester. This fall, Homecoming 2010, set for October 15 – 17, will be themed around the 50th anniversary with programming dedicated to celebrating the university’s history in the Shenandoah Valley region as well as its present and future success. The university will unveil a special logo for the 50th anniversary in Winchester during the Dayton Luncheon on Saturday, April 24.
