The Center for Faith Community Nursing at Shenandoah University will offer the three-session training course “Congregational Health Advocates: Widening the Circle of Care” on October 10 and 25 and November 8. The course is open to anyone interested in becoming a congregational health advocate (CHA), which is a volunteer who is or would like to become a member of a health ministry team or congregational care committee in their congregation.

“This is a 16-hour ministry training course that will help participants identify their gifts for ministry and develop skills in promoting health and wholeness within a faith community,” said Vickie Morley, faith community nurse and continuing education coordinator for the Division of Nursing at Shenandoah University. Morley added that prior training in a health-care field is not required for participation in health ministry at this level of care.

The Rev. Donna B. Coffman, who has also been a registered nurse since 1967, will facilitate the sessions. Topics will range from “The Role of the CHA” and “The Church’s Involvement in Health” to “Health Promotion in the Congregation.” Activities will include lectures, spiritual reflection, wellness exercises and healthy fellowship time.

The course will be held in the Health Professions Building on the campus of the Winchester Medical Center. The cost is $50 and includes class materials and manuals, refreshments each day, and lunch on October 10. Participants successfully completing the course will receive a certificate from Shenandoah University’s Division of Nursing.
