Shenandoah University will host the National Jazz Workshop 2009, July 19-24, at the university’s main campus in Winchester, Va., about 70 miles west of Washington, D.C.
The workshop is designed for students, educators, professionals and jazz enthusiasts of all levels and abilities. Participants must be 13 or older to participate. Shenandoah University will also offer undergraduate and graduate credit, up to three credits in three individual courses of one credit each at either the undergraduate or graduate levels.
Participants can study with some of the nation's finest jazz faculty at the new, comprehensive and inexpensive workshop designed for students and educators. The curriculum will cover the following areas of study: improvisation, big bands, small groups, composition/arranging, jazz history, Apple computer software technology, recording techniques and technologies as well as masterclasses.
“The National Jazz Workshop is based on the spirit and traditions of the Stan Kenton jazz workshops that revolutionized jazz education in the United States,” said Associate Professor of Music, Jazz Piano, Robert Larson, DMA. Students may focus their studies on performance, arranging or music technology.”
Participants will be grouped with peers, and adults and educators may participate on a non-performing status, if desired. In fact, Thursday, July 23, is Music Educators’ Day. All events will be open to music educators at no charge.

Faculty, sponsors and performing artists include The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (featuring the music of Johnny Hodges), The Navy Commodores, Buffet/Crampon, The Jazz Educators Network (JEN), The U.S. Army Blues, Pete Barenbregge from Alfred Publishing/Belwin Jazz, arrangers Alan Baylock and Bryan Kidd, The Capitol Bones, and Courtois trombones.
