Beginning on Friday, March 5, 58 members of the Shenandoah University community will depart for 10 days to one of five destinations around the world during spring break as part of the Global Citizenship Project (GCP). The participants - faculty, staff and students - were selected through an essay application process that took place in September 2009.

The GCP program is funded annually by the university and focuses primarily, but not exclusively, on those individuals who have never been out of the United States. Travel expenses are paid by the university. GCP is an outgrowth of a gift from Dr. Nancy Larrick Crosby, a long-time friend and former trustee of the university, and honors her memory.

Studying the past five years of GCP, research shows that once non-travelers have successfully gone abroad, they are forever changed and many are eager to go global again to study, work and live. The groups of 12-14 participants for each destination are led by a faculty leader who has expertise in the country being visited. This year, GCP trips will take place in the following destinations:  Peru, Oman, Egypt, Myanmar (Burma), and Belize.

Special activities will take place in each country, allowing participants to truly take part in cultural experiences while abroad. Participants, when conditions permit, will provide updates on their experiences on the Web site http://www.learning-abroad.blogspot.com/ and  Facebook.

Also departing on Friday, March 5 is a group of eight traveling to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to assess the damage caused by the devastating earthquake on January 12 and determine how SU can help the country most effectively in the future. This group will be personally led by President Tracy Fitzsimmons. Cindy and Jerry Saint-Fort, a brother and sister from Haiti studying at SU, will be reunited with their family on the trip. Mass Communication student Cody Penwell is going along to document the experiences of the group. Other travelers to Haiti include:  Assistant Professor of Physician Assistant Studies Anne Schempp; Director of SU’s Physical Plant Gene Fisher; Ned Cleland, a structural engineer from Winchester; and Dr. Russell McKelway, a psychiatrist from Winchester.

While in Haiti, the group will assess the condition of College Catherine Flon, a K-12 school in Port-au-Prince that was damaged by the earthquake. College Catherine Flon is owned and administered by the Saint-Fort’s father and their mother is a retired teacher who taught at the school. Shenandoah University is committed to refurbishing the school and restoring education to the surrounding community. This is the first of a series of trips that SU will sponsor to Haiti.

President Fitzsimmons will send regular information updates describing the group’s experiences in Haiti that will be available on the Facebook page
