Shenandoah University Child Care Center Expands Curriculum by ‘Going Global’

The new curriculum help will foster a greater understanding of global perspectives; Fall enrollment options are still available

The Shenandoah University Child Care Center is “Going Global” this fall. Director of Child Care Julie Tavenner said curriculum will be added to the current preschool program that will foster a greater understanding of global perspectives.

“We want our children to be aware of cultural differences in the world while making the learning process fun and exciting for them,” said Tavenner. “We will learn about countries and cultures, international music and languages, holidays and celebrations, and make and taste ethnic foods.”

In 2009, Shenandoah University launched a first-year seminar program for all incoming first-year students, the Going Global First Year Seminar Program. Every freshman student participates in a class that focuses on a global theme as part of the program. All classes are small in size, and all classes are challenging and highly interactive. The additions to the Child Care Center curriculum were inspired by the Going Global First Year Seminar Program at the university.

At the Child Care Center, the global studies program will enhance the existing preschool curriculum that includes science, math, crafts, cooking, language arts, music and bi-weekly Spanish lessons.
